May 17 – Rongali Bihu was celebrated here on May 11 and 12 by Asam
Sahitya Sabha at the Deshabhakta Tarun Ram Phookun School premises.
The flag of the festival was hoisted by SK Das, ADC of Cachar which was followed by inauguration of the cultural programme by Diganta Bora, SP, Cachar. Many competitions were held. In the evening the next day the committee’s magazine was released. After this cultural activities took centre stage many participants from the entire State participated in the celebration.
SK Das said that it is a great occasion for us that Bihu is being organised after overcoming many obstacles. Bihu is the pride of the Assamese people and that spirit is found in Silchar town also. He added that Bihu is a secular festival and all should come forward to celebrate it together.
Anupam Pathak, secretary of Rongali Bihu festival committe said that Bihu means togetherness of all religions. It is a bridge between the people of Barak and Brahmaputra valley. There were many problems in organising this festival, but we have overcome all of them. The district administration is really helpful in this manner. On the two days, there were several competitions like Bihugeet, Bongeet, Bahi Badan, Gagana Badan etc. Udhab Kalita, founder secretary of Samanya Sanskritik Gosthi, Silchar informed that Barnali Nath won the crown of Bihu queen in Silchar.
