Assam Rifles nabs DJNA cadres along with weapons and ammunition

SILCHAR, Jan 1: With the increased activities of militant groups in Halflong, the security forces have stepped up their operation against the insurgent groups in the district.
A recent input received by the Army Intelligence Unit suggested a possible procurement of explosives at Haflong for further use to carry out sabotage activities. Based on the development of this input, it came out that an auto-rickshaw ferrying cadres of recently launched DJNA outfit would arrive in the market area. Accordingly, the Haflong based Assam Rifles Battalion along with Assam Police jointly established a vehicle check post to nab the cadres.
At around 10.30 am on last Sunday (December 30), an auto Rickshaw with the registration number of AS-08-3538 approached the Check Post. After thorough search of the vehicle, one 7.65mm Pistol (USA made) was recovered with magazine along with 5 live RDX and one Chinese Grenade. The cadres later revealed before the security personnel that they were working for the DJNA outfit and had come to Haflong with an intention to carry out extortion and give effect to sabotage activities.
In a series of successful operations in the last four weeks, the Haflong based Assam Rifles Battalion has broken another link of the DJNA outfit and caused a setback to their evil intention to harm the people of the Dima Hasao district.

Assam Rifles donates computers and furniture to Grace Standard English School

SILCHAR, Jan 1: In continuation of its Civic Action Programme, the Haflong based Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters 22 Sector Assam Rifles distributed computers with accessories and furniture to Grace Standard English School, Doiheng, in the Dima Hasao district.
The principal, students and staff members of the School along with head man and villagers were present on the occasion. The principal expressed his gratitude towards Assam Rifles for providing assistance to the school. During the distribution ceremony, a small cultural programme was organized.
The event witnessed unprecedented synergy between the civil population and the security forces which will definitely help to foster good relations between them.

Goats and handloom sewing machines distributed under IWMP scheme

SILCHAR, Jan 1: Under the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), 2009-2010, of ‘production system and micro enterprises based livelihood activities’, goats and handloom sewing machines were distributed to the several self help groups of Joypur part II of Lakhipur constituency in Cachar district yesterday.
As part of the distribution ceremony, a meeting was convened in the premises of 1335 no. Rasmoni Paul LP School, Joypur Part-II, under the Presidentship of Baikontha Goala, project manager and District officer as well, Cachar Soil Conservation Division, Silchar.
Addressing the assembly of villagers, Goala said that the IWMP scheme was an initiative of the Central Government to make the villagers independent. According to him, the scheme enables multi-cropping and the introduction of diverse agro-based activities, which, help to provide sustainable livelihoods to the people residing in the watershed areas in the Country.
One of the aims of IWMP is also to restore the ecological balance by harnessing, conserving and developing degraded natural resources such as soil, vegetative cover and water.
Throwing light on the other aspects of the scheme, the project manager requested the people to come forward in order to take benefits of this scheme. The scheme has been taken for 5 years. He said that 15 departments have been amalgamated under the scheme to provide better service to the people.
A Munaf, Handloom and textile inspector, said that the given handloom machines were completely modern and had easy techniques of operation. He pointed out that a seven-day long training workshop would also be held to make people aware about the process of using the machines.
Under the Handloom and Textile, around 12 sewing machines were distributed to six units and three goats had been given to each of 29 villagers under the livelihood scheme on the occasion.
C M Gogoi, range officer, Harinagar and A Borgohain, vetenary surgeon, also spoke on the occasion, highlighting different benefits of the scheme.
Among others present on the occasion included B Bhowmick, Ohadur Rehman, S Z Barbhuiya, Ali Ahmed Laskar and Alok Purkaystha.

Probe demanded into mysterious death of Assam university student

KARIMGANJ: A high level enquiry has been demanded into the mysterious death of Assam University student Kishlay Dutta Choudhury here in south Assam in October.
Prominent socio-cultural organisation of Barak Valley, 'Goirik Bharat', today demanded a high level probe into the death of the central university student through a memorandum to Cachar district additional deputy commissioner Debashis Chakraborty.

The memorandum expressed doubt about the police or administration's efforts to investigate into the incident even as the police failed to find any clue to the death after nearly two months of the incident.
According to Goirik Bharat's organising secretary, Mani Bhushan Choudhury, Kishlay had disappeared under mysterious circumstances when he was in a procession for immersion of Goddess Durga's idol at Sadarghat here.
Kishlay's body was recovered by police when found afloat on river Barak near Katigorah, 30 km from here, a few days later.
Choudhury said his students wing 'Bharat Chhatra Morcha' will also prevail upon the administration, both civil and police, for a proper investigation to find out the mystery behind the student's sudden disappearance from the procession and his subsequent death.
Meanwhile, Kishlay's father Kishore Kanti Dutta Choudhury has submitted several petitions to the authorities concerned for positive action to unearth the circumstances in which his son died.
Representations from various organisations, student and youth bodies have also been submitted to the authorities for necessary action, Choudhury added.

Ex-Silchar MP's son dies after suicide attempt

SILCHAR: A doctor based in Silchar, who had attempted suicide by shooting at himself with a pistol on November 30, died at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Sunday.
The 32-year-old dentist, Kunal Bhattacharjee, is the son of former Congress MP from Silchar Kamalendu Bhattacharjee.
A senior police officer said Kunal had pumped a bullet into his head around 12.30 pm on Friday at the toilet of his private clinic at Church Road. He was taken to SMCH in critical condition.

He was on ventilation at the intensive care unit of the hospital for the last three days. He succumbed to his injuries at 10.45 am on Sunday.
The pistol used by him is yet to be recovered. Police have started investigation.

KVIC fair at Silchar from Feb 23

KARIMGANJ, Dec 24 – For the first time, Silchar is going to host the North East level exhibition and fair under the auspices of Khadi and Village Industries Commission of the Govt of India. The fair will commence from February 23 at Town Club field and will continue till March 23. In order to patronise handicraft and micro, small and medium scale industries product of North-east KVIC has organised the fair. Chairman of the KVIC North-East zone and member National Committee Sharifujjaman Laskar said besides ‘North-East 150 stalls from national-level will participate in the exhibition. A strong reception committee has been constituted with Sharifujjaman Laskar as chairman with three ministers, twelve MLAs, two MPs, Vice Chancellor, Assam University, Director NIT, Principal, Silchar Medical College, educationists, DC, Cachar, SP, Cachar, Chairman, Silchar Development Authority, secretary, Silchar DSA as members. Besides forming three sub-committees.
A meeting was organised for the purpose. At the meeting, S Laskar disclosed they have invited Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister, Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister and other dignitories to inaugurate the exhibition. He informed that cultural function, competition on photography exhibition of varieties of food and sale, folk song and dance will also held every day.
Health camp: Under the auspices of the Viswa Hindu Parishad, Cachar unit a health camp was held at Ichacherra Karbipunji, the remotest corner of the West Kathighora recently.
Altogether 150 patients attended the camp where Dr Kalipada Purkayastha examined the health of the patients.
A primary medicine centre was also inaugurated. VHP is supplying medicines to this centre.
It may be mentioned that Ichacherra Karbipunji is situated under the foothill of Borail hill and whole area is dominated by tribal community. They have to visit Digharkhal, five km away for marketing. The Punji has no LP or ME school and PHC.
Considering the extreme problems of the tribals, VHP has decided to open a medicine centre here. Pradip Baishnab organising secretary, VHP Cachar said VHP is always extending helping hand towards the poor tribal people. Tribal people in different time are deprived from getting their legitimate rights. The VHP has also undertaken village renovation work.
The VHP wants to make Ichacherra Karbipunji as a model village.
